How will the 'Zona a Traffico Limitato' or Limited Traffic Zone affect you
www.athomeintuscany.org/2011/10/15/pisa-ztl-limited-traffic-zone/The ZTL is an area of a city centre that is closed to non-residential traffic. Only city buses, taxis, residents with a valid permit and other authorized vehicles (i.e. delivery vehicles, couriers, etc.), can drive there.
It has been introduced across most historical Italian cities in order to increase pedestrian areas, commercial activities, and reduce pollution to preserve historical sites.
If a vehicle crosses into one of these areas a camera takes an image of the licence plate which is sent back to the main computer of the municipal police which then checks to see if the licence plate is registered on their system. If it isn't, a fine is automatically generated and sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.
You won’t receive the fine until after you have returned home.If you have rented a car, it will probably be the car rental company that will forward it to you and they will also add on an administration fee. The fines range between €76 and €100.
Note: Your Sat Nav will not warn you if you are entering one of these areas and if you have rented your car the rental company is not obliged to notify you of their presence.
You should also be aware that you can be fined several times in the space of a few minutes, that is every time you pass under a ZTL camera
In view of this you may decide to use the train to get to a city like Florence or Pisa, however if you do decide to drive, here are the links to the websites of ZTL in Pisa,Florence and Siena:if you are intending to drive to any city other than those mentioned, search online for ZTL in that city before you go.
